Week 5 Report
REPORT WEEK 5
Only one doll separated the New Club ‘A’ and local rivals Garsington Sports Club in what turned out to be a long epic low scoring game in which Garsington’s Barry Ruffles shone with fifteen dolls (4-5-6). The opening leg Garsington set with 21 and a slow reply by New Club left anchor man John Horton needing five to tie and six to win, however he fell one short with four to give Garsington an early lead. New Club set the next leg with 22 which Garsington matched and New Club taking the leg on three sticks. The final leg was also tied 22-22 and this time three sticks could not separate them. Garsington finally winning it on the one stick shoot out 3-1.
Charlie Buckingham with 15 dolls (6-4-5) led the way for The Woodman as they chopped down the Chequers ‘A’ 3-0. He was well supported by Jeff Glenister with thirteen dolls (6-4-3) and Mark Rollins who also hit a six as they won all three legs 31-23, 25-18, 25-20. Geoff Townsend threw well for The Chequers with fourteen dolls (5-5-4).
Gladiators ‘A’ hosted The Swan ‘A’ and beat them 2-1. The Glad’s set 25 in the first leg and in return The Swan left anchor man Keith Powell needing five to win. After missing with his first stick all looked lost but Powell clanged off the doll with his next five sticks to give the Swan an unlikely lead. The Gladiators hit straight back in the next leg with an impressive 32 to the Swans set of 19. Final and deciding leg Gladiators set and won 25-21.
The Black Prince beat The George’ A’ at home 2-1 in an exciting contest. Black Prince set an imposing 33 in the opening leg. In reply The George had hit over half the target with their top half however the bottom half faltered and they fell well short with 27. George set the next leg with 25 and with Black Prince leaving their anchor man Ian McAteer needing only three to win it seemed a formality, however he struggled and only managed to hit two to tie the leg. George set and won the three sticker 13-12. A set of only 22 in the final leg was never going to be enough by The George and it showed as Black Prince raced past that with 27 to claim victory.
In Section 2 Pete Rampton hit fourteen dolls (4-6-4) for the third time in as many games for The Six Bells ‘D’ Kidlington in their 2-1 home win against The Ampleforth Arms ‘A’ in the leg scores of 20-14, 24-19, 21-23.
Adam Clemson hit his best score for a few seasons when he clanged off fourteen dolls (5-5-4) to inspire The Red Lion ‘A’ Marston to a 2-1 home win against Red Lion ‘A’ Kidlington for whom Barry Williams bagged himself a six. With the game nicely poised at 1-1 Marston Lion set 22 in the final leg and in reply Kidlington Lion crashed to a score of only 8 to condemn them to defeat.
In Section 3 Jason Ludlow was in exceptional form as he bagged himself a six in his fourteen doll haul (6-5-3) as Seacourt Bridge beat Gladiators ‘B’ 2-1 at home in the leg scores of 20-15, 21-17. 18-21.
Ian Bowler hit a baker’s dozen (5-4-4) for Littlemore British Legion ‘A’ at Rose Hill but it was all in vain as they lost 2-1. Rose Hill won the first two legs 22-19, 22-16 before The Legion grabbed a point in the final leg 19-14.
Three steady scores of 18 was enough to give The Masons Arms ‘A’ a 3-0 win at home to Six Bells ‘B’ Kidlington who replied with 14,10,13.
In Section 4 Alan Middleton hit a dozen dolls (4-3-5) for Green Road Club ‘A’ as they came away from The Blackbird with a fine 2-1 win in the leg scores of 14-17, 19-18, 15-19.
Daz Browning hit ten dolls for Red Lion 'B' Yarnton but it was not enough to prevent the Bullnose Morris'B' coming away with a 2-1 win.
Jeff Cox had a mixed night for The Cricketers Cowley at Vikings Sports ‘D’ in Section 5. He could only hit one in the first leg but followed that up with a six in his next throw but then followed that with a two in his final throw. Cricketers winning the game 2-1 in leg scores of 15-12, 19-16, 13-14.
It was the tale of the two anchor men in the clash between Donnington Club ‘B’ and Vikings Sports ‘C’. Vikings set eleven in the first leg and in return Donnington’s anchor man John Flynn Snr hit the one doll needed to win the leg. Second leg Donnington set with 14 and this time in return Vikings left their anchor man just needing one to tie two to win, however he blobbed out giving Donnington the leg. Vikings redeemed themselves in the last leg winning it 13-8.
In Section 6 Duke Of Monmouth came away from Green Road Club ‘B’ with a hard fought 2-1 win. They won the opening leg by the odd doll 15-14 thanks to anchor man Max Randall whipping off the three dolls needed to win the leg. The club men struck right back in the next leg 21-9. Final and deciding leg Duke won 17-15. Clive Walsh for Green Road was top dog with eleven dolls (3-4-4).
Red Lion ‘B’ Kidlington has a good night at home to Golden Ball. They hit 48 dolls in total winning the first leg 18-11, losing the next 16-18 and then clinching victory in the final leg 14-12.
The two Con clubs clashed in Section 7 East Oxford playing Headington and Brexit wasn’t even mentioned in a very close contest. Headington won the first two legs 11-8, 10-8 and then completed the whitewash in the final leg on three sticks after it was tied 9-9.
Red Lion Cassington are flying high after another win this time at White Hart Wytham but things could have been different if White Hart were able to field a full team. Playing with one short White Hart lost all three legs 9-14, 11-13, 12-13.
