FINALS NIGHT REPORT
In a packed hall at the Kassam Stadium Geoff Townsend from The Gladiators Club won the Oxford singles trophy for the first time defeating Terry Stuart from The Red Lion Eynsham 2-0. Townsend won the opening leg with four dolls after being set three by Stuart. Townsend then set in the next leg with an impressive five, which proved to strong for Stuart who missed two out of his first three sticks.

In The Ted Houghton singles for players from Section 4 down, Yorkie Finney (The Blackbird) beat John Cleaton (King & Queen) 2-1 in a low scoring but exciting game. Cleaton set and won the first leg 2-1 and then set two in the second leg. Finney managed to match it hitting the leveller with his final stick. Cleaton hit two in the three sticks and once again Finney matched it. In the one stick shootout Cleaton failed to trouble to doll with Finney clanging it off to level the match.
Final and deciding leg Cleaton hit two and once again Finney equalled it to send it to a three stick shoot out. Cleaton set with one and in reply after missing with his first stick Finney clanged off the next two to give him the title.

Six Bells ‘C’ Kidlington completed the double by winning the Green King Cup 2-1 against The Gladiators. With the Premier Section title in the bag, chasing a set of 18 in the opening leg Six Bells passed that with ease. Gladiators levelled in the next leg 26-21 and then could only set 21 in the final leg. Six Bells claimed the win with two players spare.

King & Queen beat Vikings Club ‘D’ 2-0 in a close contest to win the Jim Whitbread team cup. They set and won both legs 13-12, 16-14.

Paul Townsend and Neil Lyon (Black Prince ‘B’) beat Rob Bradford & Pete Shepherd 2-1 to be crowned Oxford Pairs winners. The Black Prince Pair won the first leg 9-7 with Bradford and Shepherd levelling in the next leg 8-6. The Ampleforth pair could only muster up a score of two in the final and deciding leg. It only needed Townsend to throw to pass that and win the leg and game.

In the lower section pairs, Father & Son Ian and Dave Bowler (Littlemore British Legion) just got the better over the Black Swan pairing of Eamon Hanlon and Mark Burke. Opening leg went to the Black Swan 5-4 with the Legion pair set and winning the next leg 7-3. Hanlon and Burke set the final leg with four and in reply Dave Bowler whipped off four dolls leaving son Ian to hit the one doll needed to win the leg and game.

The only six of the night hit was by Pete Dempsey from The Black Prince ‘B’ as they beat Rose Hill ‘A’ in the Monty Greenaway Shield fours. Black Prince won the first leg 11-10 however Rose Hill came back well to win the second leg 12-6. The final leg Rose Hill set eleven but in reply with Dempsey’s six Black Prince passed it with a player to spare.

Donnington Club ‘A’ comfortably won the Oxford fours defeating Littlemore British Legion 2-0 in the leg scores of 5-4 & 4-3.

Pete & Den Sellar (The Crown) beat Ray & Wayne Townsend (Six Bells Kidlington) 2-1 in the Parent & Child final. With the tie nicely poised at 1-1 the Townsends set five in the final leg. Pete Sellar hit three in reply and dad Den clanged off the three needed to win the leg by the odd doll.
