Week 18
REPORT FROM GAMES PLAYED ON WEDNESDAY 9th SEPTEMBER
Pete Dempsey was in tremendous form in the last round of matches as he clanged off sixteen dolls (6-5-5) for The Black Prince ‘B’ at home to Black Prince ‘A’. However his efforts were to no avail as the A team, who needed all three points to have a chance of winning Section One, won 2-1. The ‘A’ team won the first two legs 23-22, 25-23 but couldn’t get the final leg with the B team taking it 27-20.
Singles finalist Geoff Townsend whipped off fourteen dolls (5-5-4) as The Gladiators beat Section One champions New Club ‘B’ 2-1 who needed one point to claim the title. The damage was done in the opening two legs which the Glad’s won 27-20, 31-26. New Club grabbed a point in the final leg 24-20.
Kevin Giles hit fourteen dolls (4-5-5) for The Ampleforth Arms ‘A’ but they still lost at Six Bells ‘C’ Kidlington 2-1 in the leg scores of 27-23, 24-22, 24-27.
The Bullnose Morris ‘A’ finally claimed the Section 2 title after coming away from Florence Park ‘A’ in a close encounter. They set and won the opening leg 23-21, the second 23-22 and finally the third leg 24-22. Andy Gorge was top dog with thirteen dolls (5-4-4).
Rose Hill scored the most dolls in this section but they fell three points short of The Bullnose after they beat Red Lion ‘B’ Eynsham 2-1 in the leg scores of 22-17, 20-19, 16-20.
Steve Tooke finished off a fine season with a baker’s dozen (4-4-5) for The Golden Ball ‘A’ as they came away from Kennington Social Club with a 2-1 win. They won the first leg 21-15 with Kennington levelling in the next leg 20-18. Golden Ball set and won the final and deciding leg by the odd doll 20-19.
In Section 3 James Morrison threw well for his fourteen dolls (5-4-5) as The Masons Arms ‘A’ bowled over The Cricketers on their own patch 2-1. The opening two legs were shared 11-18, 15-14, with The Masons winning the important final leg 20-12.
Section 4 champions Six Bells ‘A’ Kidlington, after winning fourteen out of their opening fifteen games, lost the last three games of the season, this time at home to Vikings Sports ‘D’ 2-1. They started off well winning the first leg 20-14. Vikings won the next leg 18-16 and then the deciding leg on three sticks after it was tied 21-21.
Ian Sharp hit thirteen dolls (4-5-4) for basement boys Pheasant Inn ‘A’ in their 2-1 defeat at North Oxford Con Club. They had a great start winning the opening leg on three sticks after it was tied 17-17, but that proved to be their only success as The Con Club rallied and won the next two legs 19-16, 19-16.
In Section 6 Pete Wells bagged himself a six in his thirteen doll haul (2-6-5) for Vikings Sports ‘C’ as they beat Six Bells ‘B’ Kidlington 2-1. Vikings won the first two legs 15-11, 22-12 but lost the last leg on three sticks after it was tied 16-16. Nigel Cruickshank also hit a six for The Six Bells.
Anchor man Geoff Howell saved The Catherine Wheel’s blushes in the final leg at Red Lion Yarnton in Section 7. Chasing a set of nine, the seven players before Howell all failed to trouble the doll, but Howell came to their rescue to save their embarrassment. The Lion won the first leg 14-8 and the next leg was tied 11-11. Three sticks and one stick shoot outs could not separate them with The Lion winning it 10-9 back on six sticks. They then wrapped up maximum points in that final leg.
