REPORT FROM GAMES PLAYED ON WEDNESDAY 19th AUGUST
The Six Bells ‘C’ Kidlington need just one more point to retain the Premier title after their 2-1 win at home to Yarnton British Legion. The Bells won the first two legs 25-24, 26-19 with Yarnton taking the last leg by the odd doll 29-28.
The Gladiators extinguished any hopes The Woodman had of the title after beating them 2-1 despite both teams scoring the same number of dolls. The Glad’s won the opening leg 22-20 and then set 28 in the next leg. However The Woodman came storming back to win it with a chase of 30. The final and deciding leg Glad’s won on three sticks 10-9 after it was tied 21-21. Kevin Baker top scored for The Gladiators with fourteen dolls (6-4-4).
The Section One title is still up for grabs and The New Club ‘A’ gave their chances a boost with a 2-1 home win over Ampleforth Arms ‘A’. They had to do it the hard way coming from behind after losing the opening leg on three sticks after it was tied 24-24. New Club levelled in the next leg 24-21 and then made sure of victory in the final leg 29-23. Robert Taylor was in fine form with fourteen dolls (6-5-3) for The New Club.
The Black Prince ‘A’ lost ground after they suffered a narrow 2-1 defeat at home to Red Lion ‘A’ Eynsham. The opening leg went to The Lion 28-25 with the next leg tied 24-24. The Black Prince winning it on three sticks. The deciding leg Lion won it by one doll 22-21.
The top of Section 2 is still very tight with only three points separating the top three. Leaders The Bullnose Morris ‘A’ came away from rivals Red Lion ‘B’ Eynsham with a 2-1 win. Bullnose went 1-0 up in the first leg 23-18 with Red Lion drawing level in the next leg 19-17. Victory was sealed for The Bullnose in the final leg 23-21.
Rose Hill Club ‘A’ gained a point on the leaders with a good win away at Florence Park ‘A’. Kevin Stuart led the way with a baker’s dozen (4-4-5) as they won all three legs 19-14, 21-19, 30-15.
The Crown Chalgrove have one hand on the Section 3 crown after a easy 3-0 win at a depleted Cricketers side. Former singles champion Dennis Sellar at last found form as he clanged off fourteen dolls (5-4-5) in the leg scores of 16-11, 20-11, 21-8.
Six Bells ‘A’ Kidlington are Section 4 champions after defeating Donnington Club ‘A’ 3-0 at home. They were never in any danger winning all three legs 19-15, 18-12, 17-13.
There was very little to choose between North Oxford Con Club ‘A’ and Garsington Sports ‘B’ as two of the legs went to three sticks. Garsington set and won the first leg 13-12. North Oxford set with thirteen in the next leg which Garsington tied and then won it on three sticks. The final leg was also tied 12-12 but North Oxford won the three stick shootout.
Brill Sports Club ‘A’ and The Masons Arms ‘A’ was just as tight. The opening leg was tied 8-8 and Masons could only set two in the three sticks. Brill’s lead off man Terry Pinchen clanged off all three dolls to win the leg on his own. Brill then scrapped the next leg by the odd doll 15-14 before Masons grabbed a point in the final leg 11-10.
New Club ‘B’ can pop open the champagne as they claimed the Section 5 title with a 2-1 win over their closest rivals Donnington Club ‘C’. Needing only a point, they managed that in the opening leg 19-14. Donnington levelled in the next leg 15-12 before New Club wrapped up victory 18-16 in the final leg.
Rose Hill Club ‘C’ lead the chase for the Section 6 title and boosted their chances with a maximum 3-0 win at home to Seacourt Bridge. They comfortably won the first two legs 17-9, 18-14 and the last leg by the odd doll 15-14.
The King & Queen fall two points behind after dropping a leg at home to Green Road Club ‘A’. It was all going to plan in the opening two legs as they won them 20-15, 19-18, but a disastrous final leg cost them maximum points when they could only set 10, which Green Road went past with ease hitting seventeen. Alan Middleton was in tremendous form for the clubmen as he bagged himself a six in his fourteen doll haul (3-6-5).
Berskshire and Northway Cub ‘A’ have battled for the Section 7 title all season and Berkshire move two points clear after claiming maximum points against basement boys Catherine Wheel. The leaders were never troubled as they won all three legs 20-9, 13-9, 18-9.
Northway Club dropped a point at home to Cowley Workers. After going two up 17-6, 16-10, they lost the final leg 15-13.
In Section 8 Donnington Club ‘B’ are still at the summit despite dropping a leg at home to Red Lion ‘B’ Kidlington. After going in to an early lead in the opening leg 14-10 they lost the next leg by one doll 13-12. They wrapped up victory in the final leg 11-9.
The Original Swan stay on their tail with a 2-1 win at The Pheasant Inn ‘B’. After winning the first two legs 18-12, 19-15 they collapsed in the final leg to lost it 11-12. Steve Ledwell was top dog with fourteen dolls (5-5-4) for the Swan.
Despite Kevin Morrisey failing to trouble the doll all night, Section 9 leaders The Black Swan came away from The Golden Ball ‘B’ with a well deserved 2-1 win. They stormed the first leg 20-12 but were pegged back in the next leg 11-9. Golden Ball set the last leg with eleven, however it was not quite enough as the Swan swam past with fourteen. Trevor Jones top scored with ten dolls for The Swan.
