FINALS NIGHT REPORT

Kevin Baker from the Gladiators successfully retained the Oxford Singles Cup when he defeated Roger Goodall from The White House 2-1. Goodall set in the opening leg with 3, Baker passing that with 4 and a stick to spare. Baker then set the next leg with 3 which Goodall matched to send it to three sticks. They both hit two apiece in the three sticker to send it to one stick which they both missed. So back to six sticks which Baker set three. In reply Goodall missed with his first stick but clanged off the doll with his next four to level the game and send it to a final leg. Baker won the toss and decided to set which proved to be a wise choice has he banged in a maximum six. Goodall hit the doll with his first stick in reply but missed with his next to give Baker his second win and Goodall’s second loss.

In The Ted Houghton Singles Jack Lane from Northway Club ‘C’ defeated Aiden Cadle from Rose Hill Club 2-1. Cadle set three in the first leg and in return Lane had a disastrous start missing with his first two sticks, however he composed himself and clanged off the doll with his next four sticks to give him an early lead. In the second leg Cadle set again but blobbed out leaving Lane to whip off the doll with his first stick to give him his first singles title.

In The Stuart & Sons Cup between Premier champions The White House and runners up The Gladiators produced one of the most thrilling high scoring finals for many years. The Glad’s set the first leg with an impressive 30. In reply The White House threw steady to leave anchor man Dick Walsh needing three to win, unfortunately Walsh could only hit one to give the Glad’s the leg. Second leg White House set with 27 and in return Glad’s left their anchorman Kevin Baker needing all six to win and five to tie, and he nearly pulled it off, after hitting four dolls with one stick to spare his final stick just flew over the top of the doll to leave them one short with 26 and send the game into a final leg decider. White House won the toss and decided to set and hit an imposing 28. Mixed scoring from The Glad’s in return left anchor man Baker needing five to win and this time he was successful clanging off the winning doll with his final stick to give a winning total of 29. Goodall threw well for The White House with 14 dolls (4-6-4).

Kevin & Ashley Stuart from Littlemore British Legion beat fellow team mates Dave & Ian Bowler in a close fought contest in the Parent & Child final. The Stuarts won the opening leg 4-3 and in the second leg they both his 5 to send it to three sticks. The Bowlers set 6 which was more than enough to give them the leg and level the game. Final and deciding leg the Bowlers set 6. Ashley Stuart hit three and dad Kevin whipped off the four dolls needed to win the leg and game.

The Oxford Pairs winners were Dale Jacobs and Chris Webb from Section 2 The Masons Arms ‘A’ who defeated The White House pair of Ian Grant & Mick Phipps 2-0. They won both legs 3-2, 7-5.

The White House retained The Monty Greenaway Fours Sheild when they defeated The Catherine Wheel 2-0. In a low scoring game White House set and won the first leg 9-8. The second leg was tied 7-7 with White House winning it on three sticks 5-4.

The Jim Whitbread Cup was an exciting close contest with Rose Hill Club just beating holders Six Bells ‘C’ 2-1. The Bells set the opening leg with 14. A slow reply by Rose Hill left anchorman Ray Winfield needing four to win and he was up to the task whipping off all four to give Rose Hill an early lead. Rose Hill then set 16 in the second leg which was not enough as Six Bells shot past that with three players still to throw. Final and deciding leg Bells set with 15 and this time it was Rose Hill that sailed past that with a player to spare to give them their first win in this competition.

The Lower section pairs was decided on a long fought out final leg, between Chris Jilbert & Joe Bandrowski from The Masons Arms ‘B’ and Brian Lovatt & Adi Cox from Rose Hill Club. With the scores at one leg each the Rose Hill pair set 5 which the Masons pair matched. The three sticker and one sticker could not separate them so back to six sticks which Jilbert and Bandrowski won 4-3.

The Oxford Fours was also between Masons Arms ‘B’ and Rose Hill and once again Rose Hill lost out as Masons won 2-1. Rose Hill won the first leg 9-8 with the Masons levelling in the second leg 9-7. A decent set of 12 by Rose Hill in the deciding leg pushed Masons all the way, however with anchorman Bandrowski needing two to win this proved to be no problem as he whipped off the two needed with sticks to spare.

Trophies were presented by our main sponsor Kevin Stuart from Stuart & Sons Building Services and a special award was presented to James Morrison from The New Club for his 18 dolls away at North Leigh FC.
