With just four weeks of the season to go all sections are still up for grabs. Premier leaders Black Prince boosted their chances by getting revenge over the only team to have beaten them this season, Gladiators ‘A’, 2-1 at home. They won the opening leg 29-23. Second leg was tied 23-23 with Black Prince winning it on three sticks with a set of 14. Gladiators grabbed a point in the final leg 26-24. Phil Austin was top dog for the Prince with 14 dolls (3-5-6) and was well supported by teammate and top doll scorer Rob Bradford with a baker’s dozen (5-4-4).
The Swan ’A’ who are only four points behind with a game in hand dropped a valuable point at home to Garsington Sports club in a low scoring game, and it could have been even worse. The sportsmen set the opening leg with 23 which the Swan matched. Three sticks were tied 11-11 before Swan finally managed to win the leg on one stick 3-2. Things didn’t get any better in the second leg for the Swan who could only set a measly 16, which Garsington passed with ease. Final and deciding leg Swan set and won 21-17.
The Blackbird holds a four-point lead in Section One and stopped a three-game loss on the bounce when they defeated The New Club 2-1 at home. Winning the first two legs 23-20, 22-19 before New club snatched a point in the final leg by the smallest of margins 22-21.
The George ‘A’ and North Leigh FC fought out a close exciting game as only two dolls separated them all night. North Leigh won the opening leg on three sticks after it was tied 19-19. George levelled in the next leg 25-23 with North Leigh claiming victory in the final leg 24-20.Charlie Buckingham bagged himself a six in his dozen dolls haul (3-6-3) for the football club.
Red Lion ‘B’ Kidlington still top the table in Section 2 after beating close rivals Queens Head 2-1. They had to rely on a three stick shoot out in the opening leg after it was tied 19-19 but Queens Head kept their title ambitions alive winning the second leg 21-20. Lion then extinguished that hope in the final leg winning it 23-17.
Six Bells ‘A’ are just a point behind after beating The Chequers ‘B’ who still have a chance of claiming the title. Alan Surman for the Bells was in tremendous form and led the way clanging off 15 dolls (5-5-5) as they won the first leg on three sticks after it was tied 21-21. Chequers levelled in the next leg 21-20 before Bells won the all important third leg 25-22. Chris Webb for the Chequers was in fine form again hitting 14 dolls (5-5-4).
Red Lion ‘A’ Yarnton climb up the table continues after they won their sixth game on the bounce. This time they came away form Donnington Club ‘A’ with maximum points, but it was much closer than the score line suggests. They won the first leg by the odd doll 19-18, won the next 20-15 and had to rely on three sticks in the final leg when it was drawn 18-18. Adam Baker for Donnington hit his best score of the season with 14 dolls (5-4-5).
Gladiators ‘B’ fine form continues when they won for the fourth time in succession beating Chequers ‘A’ at home 2-1. Keith Tanner hit a rare six in his ten-doll haul as they won the first leg 20-17, lost the next 21-18 and won the final leg 25-15.
Seacourt Bridge grabbed a fine 3-0 win at Vikings ‘A’ winning all three legs 22-17, 20-14, 19-16.
Blackbird ‘A’ rule the roost in Section 3 with their sixth game winning run against host Ampleforth Arms ‘B’. They sneaked the first leg 14-13 but then comfortably won the next two legs 16-8, 17-13 to complete the whitewash.
Propping up the table George ‘B’ had a good 2-1 win at Cowley Workers who will be kicking themselves as they scored more dolls than their victors (41-35). The first two legs could not have been any closer as The George won them both 13-12, 14-13, with the Workers winning the final leg 16-8.
Despite a baker’s dozen (3-6-4) from Steve Tooke Catherine Wheel succumbed to a strong finish from title contenders Masons Arms ‘A’. The Wheel went into a one nil lead winning the first leg 17-14, however Masons hit back strongly in the next two legs 19-16, 22-16 to move within four points of the leaders.
Red Lion ‘A’ Kidlington title ambitions are still intact when they whitewashed visitors Cricketers Arms 3-0 in the leg scores of 21-12, 18-15, 18-14.
Section 4 leaders Blectchington Sports impressive run continues as they won their eighth game in a row and open up a four-point lead. Against a depleted Six Bells ‘C’ side they had no trouble winning all three legs 18-9, 17-11, 18-10.
Close in pursuit Red Lion ‘B’ Yarnton dropped a valuable point at home to The Tandem. Winning the first two legs 12-11, 19-10 they couldn’t quire complete the whitewash when The Tandem set and won with an impressive 20-18.
Rose Hill club had a disastrous first leg at Kidlington FC when they could only set 6, with Kidlington doubling that in reply with 12. Rose Hill did regroup in the next two legs winning them both 11-9, 13-7.
Chris Jilbert whipped off a six in his opening throw for The Masons Arms ‘B’ as they won the first leg at Six Bells quarry 18-15. However, that was to be their only success as Six Bells hit back to win the next two legs 17-12, 15-11. Graham Morton topped scored for The Bells with a dozen dolls (3-4-5).
Rooted at the foot of the table Duke Of Monmouth’s winning streak continues when they beat visitors Six Bells ‘B’ 2-1. Losing the first leg 13-12, they recovered well to win the next two legs 15-10, 15-12 to make it a three-game running win.
The race for the Section 5 title is now down to two teams Swan ‘C’ Eynsham and Littlemore Rugby club who both lead with 27 points although Swan has a game in hand. Swan boosted their chances with an easy 3-0 win at home to White Hart 15-10, 16-3, 18-9.
Littlemore Rugby club crashed at home to The White Horse 2-1. A disastrous first two legs done all the damage losing them both 11-10, 11-8. They redeemed them selves in the final leg 10-7 but this put a dent in their title ambitions.
A high scoring game saw Northway Club ‘B’ come away from the Cricketers with a 2-1 win. Setting all three legs Northway won the first leg 15-12 and then set 16 in the next. It was a big ask for Cricketers to at least match that, but they gave it a good go. They left anchor man Doug Mingham needing all six to tie and he gave it a good go just falling one short with 5. Cricketers took a point in the final leg 15-11.
