Week 2 30th April
Scott Thompson was in scintillating form as he clanged off 15 dolls (4-5-6) for Littlemore British Legion C in their 2-1 win at home to Black Horse ‘A’. Legion set and won the opening leg 24-20 and were then set 21 in the second leg, which proved to be no problem as they hit 23 in reply to go two up. Final leg Legion could only muster up a set of 20 which The Black Horse galloped past with 24. Steve Walton bagged himself a six in his 12 dolls haul (3-3-6) for The Black Horse.
Consistent throwing by New Club ‘A’ secured them all three points at home to The Swan. Half the team hit double figures with Luke Purcell leading the way by hitting his second six of the season in his dozen dolls (6-2-4) as they won all three legs 26-23, 25-21, 28-24.
White House comfortably won their opening leg at home to Garsington Sports 23-17, however Garsington hit straight back in the second leg, with a five-doll handicap they banged in a set of 27, which secured the leg as White House could only hit 22 in reply. Final and deciding leg White House set with 27, which proved to be more than enough as Garsington hit 18 in reply. Ian McAteer top scored for The White House with 12 dolls (4-4-4).
The opening leg between Yarnton B.L. and Masons Arms ‘A’ was tied 19 -19 with the Legion winning it on three sticks 9-8. Legion then went two up after setting and winning the second leg 24-20. Masons secured a point in the final leg, setting and winning it 23-17.
Ampleforth Arms ‘A’ at home to Littlemore B.L. ‘A’ won the first leg on three sticks (11-10) after it was tied 21-21, however that was to be their only success as the Legion hit back in the next two legs 21-19, 27-16 to complete the comeback. Mark Bayliss was top dog with a dozen dolls (4-3-5).
In Section 2, Duke Of Monmouth scored more dolls than their hosts Donnington Club ‘B’ but still lost 2-1. Donnington won the opener 18-15, with the Duke levelling in the second leg 22-14. Donnington won the final and deciding leg 18-15.
Despite only hitting three dolls all night (1-1-1) Rose Hills anchorman Brian Lovatt was their hero at The Black Horse ‘B’ Kidlington. Chasing a set of 15 in the first leg Lovatt clanged off the one doll needed to sneak the leg by the odd doll with 16. Rose Hill could only muster up a set of 10 in the second leg which Black Horse flew past with 19. Final leg Horse set with 17 and once again Lovatt hit the one doll needed to win the leg and with it the game with 18. Michael Trafford threw well for the Horse with 11 dolls (4-2-5).
Playing with a player short cost The Cowley Workers dear as they just lost out at Wads Bar 2-1. Workers won the first leg 15-14 but lost the next two 11-18, 15-16. John Styles top scored for the Workers with 11 dolls (5-2-4).
Only three dolls separated Queens Head ‘A’ and Six Bells ‘C’ in a close exciting contest. Queens set the first leg with 21 which the Bells matched and then went on to win it on three sticks. Queens levelled in the next leg 19-17. Bells won the final leg by the smallest of margins 16-15. Jack Lane was in fine form whipping off a baker’s dozen (5-3-5) for the Bells.
The Tandem chasing all three legs at home to The Blackbird won them all 15-14, 15-13, 24-15.
In Section 3 Vikings Sports B and Donnington Club A both scored the same number of dolls, but it was Donnington who came away victorious in a tight match. Donnington set the opening leg with 11 and in reply Vikings fell agonisingly short with 10. Vikings then set 10 in the second leg and in reply Donnington’s anchorman Derrick Slater whipped off the two dolls needed to win the leg by the odd doll. Vikings fought back well in the final leg winning it 14-11 for a deserved point.
New Club ‘B’ raced into a two-nil lead at Littlemore B.L. ‘B’ winning both legs 15-10, 14-12, however they could not complete the whitewash in the final leg when they could only muster up a set of 8, Legion passed that with ease hitting 13.
Red Lion Yarnton hit nine dolls more than their hosts The Cricketers but still lost out 2-1! They got off to a flying start in the first leg setting and winning it 19-8. However, in the second leg chasing a set of only 10, they hit 8 with two players to go and it looked a formality to go two up, however their last two players blobbed out to give the Cricketers the leg win. Cricketers set the deciding leg with 16 which Red Lion matched. Cricketers won the three sticker 10-5 to complete the comeback.
Littlemore Rugby Club beat visitors Bletchingdon Sports Club 3-0 however the game was a lot closer than the score suggests. The Ruby club set and won the opening leg 14-12. The second leg was tied 10-10 with the Rugby men winning it 9-7 on three sticks. Bletchingdon set the final leg with 10 and in reply Rugby clubs anchorman Dave Rudman smashed off the two dolls needed to just get them over the line by one doll with 11 to give them maximum points.
Masons Arms B and Queens Head B battled out an exciting close game. Masons set and won the first leg 16-12 and then set 13 in the second leg. In return Queens left anchorman Jack Wells needing 3 to win which he duly dispatched to level the game. Final leg Masons set once again this time with 13. After a slow start, Queens left Wells 5 to win and he nearly pulled it off but fell one short with 4 to send it to a three sticker, which The Masons won.
In Section 4, Ampleforth Arms ‘B’ took an early lead at Vikings Sports C winning the first leg 12-11. Vikings levelled in the second leg 10-9. Final leg Ampleforth upped their game and set 16 which proved too much for Vikings as they could only hit 9 in reply.
Golden Ball had to come from behind to beat hosts Red Lion Cassington after they lost the first leg 14-15. Second leg they won at a canter 18-10 and completed the turnaround in the final leg 13-10. Mark Finch for the Lion threw well for his 10 dolls (4-4-2).
Catherine Wheel got off to a bad start losing the first leg at home to The White Hart 8-11. In the second leg they more than doubled their first score winning it 17-7. Final leg was tied 10-10 with the Wheel winning it on three sticks.
Six Bells B banged in a set of 18 in their home game against Headington Con Club, who replied with 13. They then set 11 in the second leg, however in reply the Con club left anchorman Dave Spriggs needing three to win and he was up to the task whipping off the winning doll with his final stick. Con club set 14 in the final leg, and in return Bells hit 18 to secure the leg and match. Terry Lester hit double figures for the Bells (4-2-4).
