FINALS NIGHT REPORT
STUART & SONS OXFORD & DISTRICT AUNT SALLY 2022
.FINALS NIGHT REPORT
In a packed Cowley Workers club Chris Jenkins from the Gladiators ‘A’ was crowned Oxford singles champion after beating teammate Andy Beal 2-1. Playing in his first final and with the game nicely poised at 1-1 Jenkins set in the final leg with 3 which Beal matched. In the three sticks shoot out Jenkins clanged off all three and in return Beal hit the doll with his first stick but just fell short with his second to condemn Beal to his second defat in the singles final.
In the Ted Houghton Singles Wally Harwood from Bletchington Sports club defeated Paul Edwards from The Red Lion Kidlington 2-0 in a high scoring close game. Edwards set 3 in the opening leg; Harwood responded in style clanging off the four dolls needed to take an early lead. Second leg Edwards set four and Harwood once again hit four to match it. Edwards set one in three sticks, but Harwood was up for the challenge and whipped off the two dolls needed to give him the title for the first time.
The Oxford Pairs was won by Roger Goodall and Rob Bradford from The Black Prince who defeated Jeff Glenister and Mark Rollins from North Leigh FC. The North Leigh pair set seven in the first leg but a six from Goodall in return left Bradford to hit the two dolls needed to win the leg. Second leg Prince pair could only set four which Glenister & Rollins passed with ease to level the score. Final and deciding leg the Prince pair set and once again Goodall smashed off his second six of the night and with Bradford following up with a four gave them a substantial total of 10, which was more than enough to give them the title.
The Stuart & Sons Cup was well contested by The Black Prince & The Swan ‘A’ but it was the Premier champions the Prince who triumphed 2-1 to give them the league and cup double. In the opening leg The Swan chased a set of 19 with ease hitting 24 in reply. Second leg an impressive set of 27 by the Swan gave them a chance of a quick 2-0 win, however the champions were up to the task and hit 27 to send the leg to three sticks which they won at a canter. So, to the final and deciding leg Swan could only set 21. A good start by the Prince, hitting twelve with their first three players, set them on their way to an easy win, however they faltered in the middle and left anchor man Mick Phipps needing two to win. After a couple of wayward sticks Phipps completed the task to the relief of his teammates. Dave Edwards threw well for The Swan hitting a baker’s dozen (5-5-3).
The Jim Whitbread Cup between Six Bells ‘C’ Kidlington and Littlemore Rugby club was another close exciting game after a slow start. Bells won the opening leg 11-9. Bells then upped their game and set 18 in the second leg. In reply, a good start by the Rugby Club left anchor man Dave Rudman needing three to win and he did not disappoint to level the game. Final and deciding leg Six Bells set again this time with 16. A steady reply from the rugby club left anchor man Rudman needing only one to win, which he had no problem to give the Rugby club their first win in the Jim Whitbread Cup.
The Monty Greenaway fours was contested by The Gladiators ‘A’, Andy Beal, Kevin Neal, Chris Jenkins & Kevin Giles, against North Leigh FC, Ray Grant, Neil Pratley, Charlie Buckingham & Mark Rollins. A set of 10 by the Glad’s did not seem to be enough as North Leigh responded with 9 from their first three players leaving anchor man Mark Rollins needing just two to win, however extraordinarily he blobbed out to hand the Glad’s an early lead. A set of 12 in the next leg by north Leigh was enough to win the second leg. Final leg North Leigh could only set 9 and after leadoff man Andy Beal hit five in the Glad’s reply the result was never in doubt as they hit 10 with a player to spare.
The Oxford fours was won by Blecthington sports who beat The Blackbird ‘A’ 2-0 however the game was much closer than the score line suggests. Both legs Blecthington won by the smallest of margins 10-9, 10-9.
The lower section pairs were won by Stephen Reeves and Gary Smith from Vikings Sports ‘B’ who beat Clive Walsh and Dean Plumstead from the Six Bells ‘C’ Kidlington 2-0.
Kevin Stuart & Ashley Stuart (who sponsor the league) from The George successfully defended the Parent & Child Cup when they defeated Terry & Steve Buckle from The Blackbird ‘A’ 2-0. Stuarts won the opening leg with 4-1. Chasing a set of 4 in the second leg the Stuarts matched it to send it to a three stick shoot out. The Blackbird pair could only set one and in reply one doll from Ashley & Kevin made sure they held onto the title.
The trophies were presented by our President Binney Casey.
