STUART & SONS OXFORD & DISTRICT AUNT SALLY 2022
OXFORD SINGLES
In one of the most dramatic and high scoring singles play offs for many years at Garsington Sports club, Andy Beal and Chris Jenkins from the Gladiators ‘A’ battled their way through to the final. In the first quarter final Pete Rampton (Red Lion Kidlington) was drawn against Rob Bradford (Black Prince). Rampton set with an impressive 5 ,missing with his last stick. In reply Bradford fell just short with 4, also missing with his last stick. Bradford then set the next leg with a maximum 6. In reply Rampton got his first two but missed with his third. Final and deciding leg was a humdinger. Rampton could only set with 3, however Bradford struggled but matched the 3 to send it to three sticks. Rampton clanged off all three, with Bradford once again matching it. They both missed with the one stick and so back to six. Rampton went in with a 5, which was more than enough to see him through.
Next up was Chris Jenkins (Gladiators ‘A’) against Keith Powell (Swan ‘A’) , which was a more mundane game. Jenkins set 3 in the opening leg, which Powell matched. Jenkins won the three sticker with a set of 2. Second leg Powell could only set with 2 which Jenkins passed with sticks to spare.
Andy Beal (Gladiators ‘A’) was pitted against Kevin Stuart (George ‘A’) who had just hit 17 dolls the week before. Stuart set the first leg with 4, and in reply Beal clanged off all six to give him an early lead. Beal then went back in to set the second leg with 5 and in reply Stuart hit 4 with a stick to go, but his last stick just sailed past to send Beal into the semi-finals.
Last quarter final Chris Webb (Chequers) played Kevin Baker (Gladiators ‘A’) and it was Baker who got the game of to a blistering start by whipping off all six to win the opening leg. Webb levelled in the next leg setting and winning it 4-2. Final and deciding leg Baker could only set with 1 which was never going to be enough as Webb clanged off the doll with his first two sticks.
To the semi-final stage, and in the first semi-final between Andy Beal & Chris Webb was another close game. Webb set the opener with 4 and in reply Beal whipped off the first five dolls to go one up. Beal went straight back in the second leg and after hitting the first two dolls that was to be his final tally. Webb hit the three needed to level. Final and deciding leg and a case of hit one miss one Webb set three. Beal in return clanged off the doll with his first four sticks to send him into his second singles final.
He will be joined by teammate Chris Jenkins, who will play his first singles final, he beat Pete Rampton 2-0, winning the first leg 3-2 and the second with a set of 5.
