Pairs Report

STUART & SONS OXFORD & DISTRICT AUNT SALLY 2022
PAIRS WEEK
It was the Pairs competition week and in the Oxford Pairs played at two venues, Jeff.Gelnister & Mark Rollins (North Leigh FC) Martin Herbert & Dave Lee, Mark.Revill & Lee.Thompson (Swan A) Rob Bradford & Roger Goodall (Black Prince) battled their way through to the semi-finals.
The games at The Cricketers Temple Cowley started late because of the LTNs and the Cowley Road being closed without notice or warning. In the first round Goodall and Bradford had to fight hard to overcome Scott Thompson & Kevin Baker from The Gladiators. With the game nicely poised at 1-1 the final leg had to be decided on three sticks in the Black Prince pairs favour after it was tied 7-7. In the next round they had a comfortable 2-0 win against Ray Grant & Spencer Buckingham from North Leigh FC. In the Quarter final they were taken all the way by the Six Bells pair of Alan Surman & Alan Goodgame who won the opening leg 5-4. Goodall and Bradford then set 9 in the second leg and despite a six from Surman in reply they fell one short with 8. The final leg a set of 4 by Surman and Goodgame was never going to be enough as the Black Prince passed that with ease.
Mark Revill and Lee Thompson beat the pair from The Gladiators Kevin Giles & Chris Jenkins 2-0 in the first round. Winning the first leg 2-1 they were taken all the way in the second leg winning it on three sticks after it was tied 7-7. In the second round they were drawn against Dave Simms and Mark Washington from The Ampleforth Arms and won both legs 6-4, 6-5. In the quarter final against Jason Fox & Steve Ducker from The Six Bells the first leg was a humdinger. First throw was tied 5-5 and three sticks and one stick could not separate them, so back to six sticks, and a set of 6 was enough to see them claim the first leg. They then completed the win in the second leg when chasing a set of only 2 passed that with sticks to spare.
Played at The Ampleforth Arms on time the 1st round game between Jeff Glenister & Mark Rollins (North Leigh FC) and Ian McAteer & Trevor Dyer (Black Prince) was an exciting close game. The opening leg Black Prince pair set 6 which Glenister & Rollins matched. McAteer & Dyer setting and winning the leg on three sticks 2-1. Black Prince pair levelled in the next leg 6-4, and so on to the final and deciding leg. Six sticks were tied 5-5, three sticks tied 3-3 before Glenister & Rollins set 1 in the one stick shootout, which proved to be enough.
In the second round against Andy Gorge and Gary Coulthard from The Blackbird A they won the first leg 4-2 but lost the next on three sticks after it was tied 4-4. Final leg the Blackbird pair set 4 and in reply Glenister hit 4 and Rollins hit the winning doll with sticks to spare.
In the quarter final they beat the Blackbird pairing of Craig & Graham Hambridge 7-4, 8-4.

In the Lower Section pairs played at one venue, The Gladiators Club, Joe Bandrowski & Phil Jilbert (Masons Arms ‘B’) Steve Bradbury & Andy Clare (Cowley Workers ‘A’) Clive Walsh & Dean Plumstead (Six Bells ‘C’) Steven Reeves & Gary Smith (Vikings ‘B’) made it through to the semi-finals.
In the Preliminary round Reeves & Smith beat Paul Swayer & Pete Soanes from Bletchington Sports 7-5, 5-4. In the next round some good throwing saw them through against Kevin Bloomfield & Derick Bourton (Blackbird A) 6-3, 9-1.
In the Quarter Final against Phil Cassidy & Kevin Morris from Donnington Club B they won the first leg 5-1 and then were set 5 in the second leg. In reply a good start from Reeves hitting four dolls left Smith to clang off the two dolls needed to put them through to the Semi-finals.
Joe Bandrowski & Chris Jilbert from the Masons Arms did not drop a leg on the way to the semi-finals. They defeated Sam Macer & Paul Simms from Donnington Club B 6-5, 5-4 and then Yorkie & Tom Finney from The Blackbird 5-4, 4-3.
Steven Bradbury & Andy Clare from Cowley Workers had to rely on a three-stick shootout in the final leg to overcome their first round opponents Paul Edwards & Adam Williams (Red Lion A). They won it on three sticks 2-1 after the leg was tied 4-4. In the Quarter final they had to come from behind to defeat Six Bells C pairing of Phil Hounslow & Nick Edmonds who won the first leg 4-3. Bradbury & Clare levelled in the next leg 2-1 and won the deciding leg at ease when chasing a set of only 1.
Clive Walsh & Dean Plumstead threw well to beat David Lammin & Dave Rudman from Littlemore Rugby club 2-1 in the first round. They won the first leg 7-5, lost the next 6-1 and finally claimed the win in the final leg 6-3. In the next round they were drawn against Terry & Steve Buckle from The Blackbird A. With the tie nicely poised at 1-1 Walsh and Plumstead set 3 in the final leg which the Buckles matched. They then set 3 in the three-stick shootout and again the Buckle matched. One stick was also tied so back to six sticks which the Bells pair won 4-2.
