Parent & Child Report

What a great night of Aunt Sally and history almost made in the Parent & Child competition. Zoe Beal with her father Andy almost made it to the final where no woman has taken part in this competitions final since it began back in 1977.

They beat Yorkie & Tom Finney (Blackbird A) 2-1 in the first round and then by the same score Dave & Ben Green from The Chequers in the next round. In the semi-final they were up against the holders Kevin & Ashley Stuart from The George. Opening leg the Beal’s set and won 5-4. Second leg Stuarts set 5 which the Beal’s matched. Onto three sticks and Stuart’s set 2 and once again the Beal’s matched. The one stick shootout went to the Stuart’s with Ashley hitting the only doll to level the game. Final and deciding leg Stuart’s set 6. In reply Zoe went in and hit 2 but unfortunately Andy couldn’t hit the five to win, so the Stuarts will now take part in their third final running. Considering this was Zoe’s first ever Aunt Sally game she has played, she done well by not blobbing out all night and hitting a 4 in one leg.

The underdogs Terry & Steve Buckle from The Blackbird had a bye in the first round and were then drawn against co favourites Mick & Mick Phipps from The Black Prince and came away with a valuable 2-1 win. In the semi-final they were up against Mark & Elliott Washington from The Ampleforth who were on top form and had not dropped a leg in the previous two rounds. However, this did not faze the Buckles as they triumphed 2-0.

Overall, it was a good night of Aunt Sally, the venue was perfect, sun was shining and apart from the pubs dog pinching the doll off the swivel, respect was shown amongst all the players while the games were going on and in the semi-final games you could hear a pin drop!
