Week 16

REPORT FROM GAMES PLAYED ON WEDNESDAY 27th AUGUST

With two games of the season to play The Bullnose Morris ‘A’ have become the first and only team to win a section this season so far by claiming the Section 3 title with a 3-0 win at their closest rivals The Crown ‘A’. Willy Waite with a dozen dolls including a six led the way as they won all three legs 24-18, 24-14, 22-16.

The Premier title is still up for grabs, however The Six Bells’ C’ Kidlington now have one hand on it after coming away from the holders The Cricketers ‘B’ with a close 2-1 victory. The opening leg was tied 27-27 with The Six Bells winning it on three sticks. Cricketers levelled in the next leg 27-23. The final and deciding leg went to the Bells 28-23. Roger Goodall top scored for the Bells with thirteen dolls (4-5-4), while Den Sellar was in top form for The Cricketers with fifteen dolls (4-5-6).
The Three Pigeons slipped up at home to The Red Lion ‘A’ Eynsham and lost pace on the leaders. They set in the opening leg with 26 and after a steady reply Red Lion’s anchor man Keith Powel was left needing five to win the leg, and he was more than up to the task, after missing with his first stick he clanged off the next five to seal the leg win. Lion then went two up in the next leg winning it 33-30. Pigeons grabbed a point in the final leg 29-28.
Paul Townsend (6-4-5) and Kevin Giles (5-4-5) top scored for The Pigeons, while Lee Thompson had a good night for the Lion with thirteen (3-4-6).

One of three teams can still win Section 2 and the top two clashed with The Woodman coming out on top 2-1 at home to The Ampleforth Arms ‘A’. They won the first two legs 21-14, 25-19, and lost the last leg 24-19.
Six Bells Quarry who led for the first twelve weeks of the season drop down to third after another defeat, this time at home to Vikings Sports ‘B’. They lost the first leg 23-20 and then set 18 in the second leg which looked like it would be enough to win the leg, until up stepped Vikings anchor man Allan Davies who clanged off the five dolls needed to snatch victory by the odd doll. Six Bells salvaging a point in the final leg 20-18.

Pressure seems to be getting to Section 4 leaders Queens Head after they crashed at home to six man team Donnington Club ‘A’, who won the first two legs 13-12, 14-13. Queens snatching a point in the final leg 19-18.
The Pheasant Inn ‘A’ had a tremendous opening leg away at New Club ‘C’ when they set and won 28-19. Pheasant then went on to take maximum points in the next two legs 24-13, 22-18. Alan Bolster bagged himself a six in his dozen dolls (4-2-6).

Vikings Sports ‘D’ open a two point lead at the top of Section 5 after a 2-1 win over second placed New Club ‘B’. David Gardiner led the way with a steady dozen dolls (4-4-4) in the 17-9, 13-21, 23-21 leg scores.

Section 6 is still wide open with only six points separating the nine of the ten teams. Seacourt Bridge leapfrog Ampleforth Arms ‘B’ with a 3-0 whitewash at home. They won the opening leg by the odd doll 15-14 but then comfortably won the next two 15-10, 19-14.
King & Queen boosted their chances with a 2-1 win at The Six Bells ‘D’ Kidlington. John Cleaton hit a maximum six in many a long year as they came from behind to win 14-17, 20-12, 21-16.
The two Red Lion’s from Eynsham & Yarnton met and it was Yarnton that roared the loudest as they won 2-1 with both teams hitting forty four dolls. Eynsham won the first leg 17-14, with Yarnton levelling in the next leg 17-16. Final and deciding leg went to Yarnton 13-11. Duncan Merry top scored for Eynsham Lion’s with eleven dolls 4-5-2.

Gladiators ‘B’ boosted their Section 8 title ambitions with a 2-1 win over Red Lion Marston. The Glad’s easily won two of the legs 13-9, 17-8, however Red Lion had one good leg winning it 19-17.

Kings Arms ‘A’ need just two more points to be crowned Section 9 champions after beating White Hart ‘A’ 3-0 at home. They had a comfortable win in the opening leg 17-7, but only just scrapped thorough in the second leg 8-7. They took maximum points in the final leg 11-7.

In their first season Kidlington Football Club are almost there in Section 10 after their 3-0 win over White Hart ‘B’. They won all three legs 14-6, 9-2, 15-8. Daryl Connolly top scored with eight dolls (4-1-3).
Catherine Wheel’B’ still remain bottom after losing at home to The Crown ‘B’ 2-1 in a close game, 5-10, 9-10, 12-11.

CUP SEMI-FINALS

Roger Goodall and Dick Walsh both from the Six Bells ‘C’ Kidlington won their semi-finals to advance to the final of the Oxford Singles for the first time. Goodall defeated Darren Cox from Team Monarch 2-0 while Dick Walsh had to come from behind to beat Rob Bradford 2-1.

Goodall and Walsh then teamed up in the Oxford Pairs but were defeated by Kevin Giles & Neil Lyon form The Three Pigeons 2-1. Robert Taylor and John Horton from The New Club ‘A’ beat Alan Surman & Ady Cross from Six Bells ‘C’ Kidlington 2-0 in the other semi-final.

In The Parent & Child semis Dave & Ben Green (Chequers) beat Mick & Mick Phipps (Three Pigeons) 2-1 with Dave Green hitting a six while Pete & Jason Coates (Red Lion Eynsham) beat Keith & Tony Bull (Team Monarch) 2-1 in the other semi.

The under 18’s final will be between Leighton Sewell (Team Monarch) and Elliot Greenough (Original Swan ‘A’) who beat Liam Coaster (Masons Arms) and Ben Carter (Team Monarch) respectively.
