REPORT FROM GAMES PLAYED ON WEDNESDAY 20th AUGUST
The top two clashed in the Premier Section and it was hosts Six Bells ‘C’ Kidlington that clipped the Three Pigeons wings 2-1 in a close contest. The opening leg was set and won by The Pigeons 28-22 and they then set 29 in the second leg. Bells were up to the task with anchor man Steve Ward whipping off the four dolls needed to tie the leg 29-29. Pigeons could only set 10 in the three sticks which the Bells passed with players spare. The final and deciding leg Pigeons set again this time with 25 and once again anchor man Ward came to the Bells rescue by hitting the four dolls needed to tie the leg again. This time the Bells set in the three sticks with fifteen which proved too strong for Pigeons who fell well short, to give Bells victory and move three points clear with three games to go. Andy Beal was top scorer for the Bells with fourteen dolls (5-5-4).
Garsington Sports ‘A’ section one title hopes took a dent after they lost away at Red Lion ‘A’ Eynsham 2-1 in a tight contest. Lion won the first leg by the odd doll 26-25 and then were set 27 in the next leg. A four from anchor man Keith Powell levelled the leg for the Lion who went on to win the leg on three sticks 11-10. The Sport’s men grabbing a point in the final leg 26-24. Barry Ruffels was top dog for Garsington with fourteen dolls 5-4-5.
New Club ‘A’ move level second in Section One with a 2-1 home victory over Rose Hill Club ‘A’ in the leg scores of 26-24, 22-24, 26-22. Kevin Stuart threw well for Rose Hill with fourteen dolls (5-5-4).
It’s very tight at the top in Section Two and the top two went head to head with The Ampleforth Arms ‘A’ coming out on top against leaders Six Bells Quarry 3-0 . They won the opening leg on three sticks after it was tied 25-25 and this seemed to knock the wind out of Six Bells as they crashed to defeat in the next two legs 23-17, 21-14 to let in The Ampleforth who move top.
The Woodman slip into second place after another impressive victory this time at home to Red Lion Kidlington. Charlie Buckingham with thirteen dolls (4-5-4) led the way as they won all three legs 25-20, 29-19, 23-18.
Andy Lewis was in sparkling form as he clanged off fourteen dolls (5-5-4) for basement boys Three Horseshoes ‘A’ but it was all in vain as they lost to Red Lion ‘B’ Eynsham 2-1. Both teams hit fifty eight dolls in the 16-17, 21-22, 21-19 leg scores.
In Section 3 Vikings ‘A’ Pete Kennett hit a baker’s dozen (5-4-4) as they came from behind to beat Masons Arms ‘A’. Masons won the first leg 22-17 with Vikings coming back strongly in the next two legs 18-12, 22-16.
Masons Arms ‘B’ gave their Section 4 title ambitions a boost with a 2-1 win at The Pheasant Inn ‘A’. Led by top man James Morrison with fourteen dolls (4-5-5) they won the first leg 17-15 but Pheasant Inn levelled in the next leg 21-19. The deciding leg Masons set and won 20-18.
Leaders Queens Head almost came unstuck at The Original Swan ‘A’, losing the opening leg on three sticks after it was tied 18-18, they recovered to take the next two legs 16-10, 22-20.
Section 5 leaders Vikings Sports ‘D’ dropped a leg at home to bottom team White Hart. After comfortably winning the first two legs 17-14, 18-14 they failed to take maximum points in the final leg 17-20.
In Section 7 Terry Buckle hit a rare six in his thirteen doll haul (6-3-4) but it could still not prevent The Blackbird going down 3-0 at Northway Club ‘B’, 19-13, 14-10, 15-14. Kevin Vickers Snr top scored for Northway with eleven dolls (3-3-5).
A clash between the two top runners saw Six Bells ‘B’ Kidlington return a 2-1 victory at Rose Hill Club ‘B’. It was all over after the first two legs which the Bell’s won 20-13, 12-10. Rose Hill getting a point in the final leg 22-18. Mark Edwards threw well for Rose Hill with eleven dolls (4-3-4).
It’s still wide open in Section 8 and Gladiators ‘B’ boosted their chances while denting close rivals Chequers ‘C’ after their 2-1 away win. Chequers started off well winning the first leg 20-15, but that was to be their only success as The Glad’s came back well to win the next two legs 20-18, 19-13. Winston Cadogan hitting double figures for the first time this season for The Glad’s with eleven dolls (3-4-4).
Kidlington Football Club return to the top of Section 10 after beating bottom placed Catherine Wheel ‘B’ 3-0. They won the first two legs 16-8, 10-6 but had to rely on a three sticks shoot out in the final leg after it was tied 9-9.
