Week 9

REPORT FROM GAMES PLAYED ON WEDNESDAY 2ND JULY

In a record breaking night, going into the last leg four players were in with a shout of the maximum 18. Neil Lyon and Pete Dempsey from The Three Pigeons, Darren Cox, Team Monarch and Alan Goodgame, Six Bells ‘C’ Kidlington. As it was Neil Lyon for the second time, first time ever in one season and Darren Cox were successful.
Lyons 18 came in their 3-0 win at The Gladiators ‘A’. Team mate Dempsey had hit two sixes in the first two legs, but missed with his next two sticks in the final leg and clanged off the next four to total 16. They won all three legs 34-23, 29-27, 29-20. Chris Jenkins hit thirteen for The Gladaitors (5-5-3).
Darren Cox hit 18 for Team Monarch in Section 2 and became the first player to hit the maximum outside the top sections. Despite this Monarch lost out at home to a very good Woodman 3-0 for whom Paul Bennett hit a baker’s dozen (3-6-4) as they took maximum points 28-21, 27-16, 28-23.
Six Bells ‘C’ Kidlington remain top and unbeaten in the Premier Section after a 3-0 win at The Red Lion ‘A’ Eynsham. Bells’ Alan Goodgame was on for the maximum but missed with his 13th stick and then whipped of the next five to end with a tally of 17. Lion set with 30 in the opening leg and it seemed to be enough to take the leg, but the Bell’s tail waged and the last three players whipped of sixteen dolls to take the leg with 33. They then made sure of maximum points winning the next two legs 29-22, 30-24. Andy Beal chipped in with thirteen dolls (4-5-4) for the Bells while Martin Herbert was top dog for the Lion also with thirteen (3-6-4).
Philip Adams playing his first game of the season for The Cricketers ‘B’ opened up with a six in his total haul of fourteen dolls (6-5-3) but it could not prevent them going down 2-1 at Garsington Sports ‘A’ 28-24, 25-27, 30-21.
Adrian Shepherd was in fine form for New Club ‘A’ hitting fifteen dolls (6-4-5) as they came away from The Black Prince with a close 2-1 victory. New Club won the opening leg by the odd doll 26-25 then lost the next leg by the same margin 28-27. The final and deciding leg New Club set and won 31-24.

Six Bells Quarry remain unbeaten in Section 2 thanks to a 2-1 win at The Griffin. They won the first leg 22-15 but lost the next leg on three sticks after it was tied 19-19. They wrapped up the win in the final leg 23-21.
Vikings Sports ‘B’ dented The Ampleforth Arms ‘A’ title ambitions with a 2-1 home win. They lost the first leg 22-19 but rallied well to take the next two legs 25-17, 21-17.

Bullnose Morris move one point clear at the top of Section 3 with a 3-0 win at home to Six Bells ‘A’ Kidlington. Willy Waite led the way with a dozen dolls (3-4-5) running out all three legs 19-18, 21-16, 26-17.
Bottom of the table clash between The Masons Arms ‘A’ and Chequers ‘B’ saw the Chequers Steve Tooke clang off fourteen dolls (5-4-5) as they comfortably came away with all three points, 22-18, 19-14, 23-16.

In Section 4 there was very little to separate The Original Swan ‘A’ and The Pheasant Inn ‘A’ as the first two legs were tied 14-14, 15-15, with the Swan winning them both on three sticks. Swan then made it all three winning the final leg 18-16.

Section 5 leaders New Club ‘B’ had to come from behind and scrape hard for their 2-1 win at home to Brill Sports Club ‘A’. The opening leg was tied 16-16 with Brill winning it on three sticks. New Club responded well to win the next two legs by the odd doll, 15-14, 16-15. Barry Gilding top scoring for New Club with eleven dolls (5-3-3).

The local derby in Section 7 saw The Bullnose Morris ‘B’ clip The Blackbirds wings 2-1. The opening leg was tied 13-13, Bullnose taking it on three sticks. Bullnose went into a 2-0 lead winning the next leg 14-10, however The Blackbird grabbed a point in the final leg 11-10. Terry Buckle with nine dolls (3-3-3) was top man for The Blackbird.

In Section 8 Marston British Legion and Florence Park ‘B’ both hit the same number of dolls but it was the Legion who came out on top 2-1 after winning the opening leg 13-12. Florence Park levelled in the next leg 13-12 and the final and deciding leg had to be settled on three sticks after it was tied 10-10.
Section leaders The Gladiators ‘B’ had a scare against lowly Red Lion Cassington when they lost the first leg 11-10. The next leg was tied 14-14 with The Glad’s winning it on three sticks to level the game. They made sure of victory in the final leg 20-12. Kevin Flynn was in fine form hitting 11 dolls (4-3-4) for the leaders.

In Section 9 the top two and unbeaten teams Kings Arms ‘A’ and Golden Ball met and something had to give. The first leg was tied 17-17 with Golden Ball winning it 6-5 on three sticks. Kings Arms levelled in the next leg 18-14 and in the final and tense leg Golden Ball won it 23-19. Both teams ended with 54 dolls apiece.
