Report Week 8

REPORT FROM MATCHES PLAYED ON WEDNESDAY 12th JUNE

There was some top quality throwing in the Premier Section clash between The Three Pigeons and The Cricketers ‘B’. John Townsend led the way for The Cricketers with a double sixer (6-4-6) in his sixteen dolls haul while the Pigeons Kevin Giles also hit sixteen dolls (6-5-5). The game itself was a very close contest. The opening leg was tied 25-25 with The Cricketers winning it on three sticks 13-11. The next leg was also tied, 28-28 and this time The Pigeons won the three sticks shootout with a massive 19 doll set, which the Cricketers could not match. The final and deciding leg went to The Cricketers 26-22.
The Six Bells ‘C’ Kidlington and Red Lion ‘A’ Eynsham game produced four players hitting a maximum six with The Bells Dick Walsh top scoring with fourteen dolls (6-3-5) as they won all three legs 27-23, 25-20, 33-25. Mick Berry with a bakers dozen (2-6-5) was top dog for The Red Lion.
Only two points separate top from bottom in Section One and leaders The Gladiators ‘A’ crashed away at Ampleforth Arms ‘A’ 3-0. Paul Granville bagged himself a six for The Ampleforth as they ran out winners 25-19, 22-20, 22-17.

In Section 2 Cowley Workers are still searching for their first win of the season after losing at home to Black Prince ‘A’ 3-0. With the Prince winning the first two legs 18-16, 21-19 Cowley Workers set eighteen in the final leg, which seemed to be enough to give them a point after a slow reply from the Prince left their last two players needing ten to win. Seventh man David Leopold clanged off five dolls and anchor man Ian Grant whipped off all six to give them an unlikely final leg win.
Nothing could separate Team Monarch and The Bullnose Morris in the first two legs as they were both tied 19-19, 18-18 with both teams winning a leg apiece on three sticks. The final and deciding leg went to The Bullnose 21-17.
The Woodman’s Neil Pratley was in fine form as he hit fourteen dolls (4-6-4) to give them a 2-1 win at The Six Bells ‘A’ Quarry in the leg scores of 17-12, 24-15, 18-19.

Queens Head ‘A’ remain winless and rooted at the bottom of Section 3 after losing 3-0 at Kennington Club ‘A’. Two scores of 23 against replies of 18 gave the club men a two nil lead. However in the final leg Queens set 19 and Kennington had to thank their anchor man Chris Hughes who clipped off the five dolls needed to win the leg to give them maximum points.
The opening leg between Chequers ‘C’ and The Crown Chalgrove was tied 19-19 as was the three sticker 7-7. Chequers then set an impressive 6 on the one stick shootout which proved more than enough to win them the leg. They then went on to win the next two legs 20-15, 18-16.

Top played bottom in Section 4 and leaders The Original Swan beat Cowley Con Club 3-0 but the game was much closer than the result suggests. Two of the legs The Swan only own by the odd doll, 14-13, & 15-14, but they excelled in the middle leg 22-13. Darren Walker threw well for Cowley Con with ten dolls (3-4-3).

In Section 5 King & Queen ‘B’ have their anchor man Nigel Bower to thank for winning them the first two legs away at The Democrats Club. He hit a four in both legs as they chased sets of 15 & 18 to win the legs by the odd doll, 16 & 18. However he could not carry the feat through to the final leg as Democrats won the leg by the odd doll 14-13.

There was mixed fortunes for Northway Club’s Alan Giles in their clash with Donnington Club ‘B’ in Section 7. After failing to trouble the doll in the first leg he then went on to whip all six off in the next leg. It wasn’t all in vain though as they won all three legs 14-13, 21-19, 14-11.

In Section 9 Tracy Denton hit eleven dolls (4-2-5) and Paul Grant ten dolls (4-3-3) to inspire the Kings Arms to a 2-1 at home to The Blackbird. After only hitting three with their first four players Kings Arms done well to set and win the first leg 15-10. Blackbird levelled in the next leg 15-13. Final and deciding leg went to Kings Arms 15-7.

Red Lion ‘B’ Cassington move level at the top of Section 10 with a comfortable 3-0 win over leaders Headington British Legion. The result was never in doubt after they took the first leg 8-4 they then won the next two 10-4, 10-8.
