Report Week 18

REPORT FROM MATCHES PLAYED ON WEDNESDAY 5th SEPTEMBER

Garsington Sports Club ‘A’ were crowned Section One champions in one of the closest ends of the season. They were playing hosts to Red Lion ‘B’ Kidlington who only needed one point to be champions, while Garsington needed all three points. The opening leg Garsington took with ease 28-18 and then set 27 in the next leg, which The Red Lion matched. However Garsington won the leg on three sticks to take a two nil lead. The final and deciding leg Red Lion set with 25 which proved to be not enough as Garsington’s anchor man Trevor Greenaway whipped off the two dolls needed to win the leg and game which gave them the title. Ken Maunder top scored with thirteen dolls (4-5-4).
Neil Lyon from The Three Pigeons clanged off thirteen dolls (5-3-5) in their game against The Gladiators ‘A’ which proved to be decisive as it gave him the top dolls trophy from Roger Goodall (Six Bells Kidlington) by two dolls. Three Pigeons running out winners 25-22, 28-25, 30-32.

Vikings Sports ‘B’ secured the Section 2 title with a 3-0 at home to The Woodman. They won the first leg 23-19 but only won the second leg on three sticks after it was tied 13-13. The final leg win 22-19 secured them the title.

There will be a four way playoff in Section 4 in one of the most dramatic endings to a section. King & Queen ‘A’ led the way going into the final week and only needed a point to claim the title but they crashed at home 3-0 to rivals Kennington Social Club. Losing all three legs 14-21, 15-21, 18-20 meant Kennington drew level at the top. This meant a 3-0 win by The Six Bells ‘A’ Kidlington would have given them the title but they could only manage a 2-1 win at home to Kidlington Sports Club. They lost the opening leg 22-17 but came back well to win the next two legs 17-15, 21-19. Seacourt Bridge now only needed two points to snatch the title but they also succumbed to nerves and lost at home to Garsington Sports ‘B’ 2-1. They lost the first two legs 18-17, 18-16 but grabbed the all important point in the final leg 17-12. The playoffs will be held at The Chequers Quarry on Wednesday 19th September 8.00pm.

There was another close finish in Section 7. Going into the final week the lead was tied between Red Lion Islip and The Nut Tree. Red Lion Islip was up against Six Bells ‘D’ Kidlington and they just won the opening leg by the odd doll 14-13. The next leg was tied 15-15 with the Lion winning it on three sticks. They then secured maximum points in the final leg 22-16.
The Nut Tree was at home to Red Lion ‘C’ Eynsham and started of well by winning the first leg 16-14, however they then lost the next two legs and the title 13-16, 18-19.

In Section 8 Jon Dunhill was in top form as he clanged off fourteen dolls (4-5-5) to lead Fairview Inn ‘B’ to a 3-0 win at Red Lion ‘B’ Cassington, 19-9, 16-10, 15-13.

Section 11 also went down to the wire and it was Florence Park Club ‘B’ just pipping Red Lion Old Marston to the title by one point. They both ended up with seventeen wins and the same number of dolls and despite Red Lion coming away from The Original Swan with all three points it was Florence Parks 3-0 win over Red Lion Wolvercote that decided it.

Finals night will take place on Friday 19th October at Rover Social Club Roman Way.

Will all teams/ players still holding cups please return them to Keith Alder ASAP.
