Report 20th July

Despite hitting seven more dolls than their opponents 90 to 83, The Three Pigeons still lost 2-1 at home to The Cricketers in the Premier Section. In a high scoring game littered with sixes The Three Pigeons set 29 in the opening leg but Cricketers won the leg by the odd doll with a reply of 30. Cricketers then set 29 in the second leg which was just enough as the Pigeons fell one short with 28. Pigeons then banged in a massive 33 in the final leg which proved too much for The Cricketers who hit 24 in reply. Pete Dempsey (12) Dave Townsend (12) and Neil Lyon (14) all hit a six for The Pigeons while John Townsend (14) and Den Sellar (14) also hit a six for The Cricketers.
John Weller from The George bagged himself a six in his sixteen doll haul (5-5-6) as they took maximum points away at Garsington Sports Club A. In a good team effort where team mate Steve Walton hit a steady 5-5-5 they hit ninety five dolls in total to win all three legs 30-27, 32-26, 33-29.
Adrian Shepherd hit a bakers dozen (5-3-5) for The New Club as they beat The Black Swan 2-1 to stay top of Section One. New Club won the first leg 27-24 but had to rely on three sticks in the next leg after it was tied 24-24. Black Swan came back well to claim a point in the final leg 30-22.
White Hart had to come from behind to defeat The Six Bells C in a close contest. White Hart set 27 in the opening leg which Six Bells passed with 29. Six Bells then set 31 in the second leg and after a steady reply White Hart’s anchor man Keith Powell was left needing five to win the leg. He clanged off the first four missed with his next stick but whipped off the doll with his final stick to give them victory by one doll. They then wrapped up the match in the final leg 23-21.

In Section Two Alan Holt top scored with fourteen dolls (6-4-4) for The Punch Bowl but it was all in vain as they lost out to The Squire Bassett 2-1. Team mate David Leopold chipped in with thirteen dolls (4-5-4) as they lost the opening leg on three sticks after it was tied 20-20. Punch Bowl levelled in the next leg 22-21 but lost the deciding leg 29-21.

Team Monarch still rules the roost in Section 3 with a narrow victory over The Royal Sun. The first leg was a low scoring affair with both sides hitting 12. Team Monarch winning it on three sticks. The Sun won the second leg 20-17 but Monarch showed why they are top with a score of 28 in the final leg to The Sun’s 23.
Dick Brownsill hit his first six of the season as he clanged off thirteen dolls (4-3-6) to lead Tiddington Cricket Club to a 3-0 win at North Oxford Con Club. They won the first two legs by the odd doll 21-20, 20-19 but eased through in the final leg 23-14.

In Section 4 The Masons put a big dent in The Griffins title ambitions with a 3-0 victory. Jim Gaul with a six in his eleven doll haul began the damage as they won all three legs 23-19, 21-20, 26-15.
The Fairview Inn also slipped up after coming away from The Quarry Gate with no points. Lead off man Graham Morton (4-2-6) led the way as they took maximum points 20-16, 20-19, 23-21.

Chandos Arms B was unlucky to come away with only a point in their Section five clash at home to Queens Head B. The first leg was tied 15-15 with Queens Head winning it on three sticks. Queens then won the next leg by one doll 17-16 however Chandos Arms recovered well to win the final leg 23-16.
Folly Bridge player Martyn Boulton was in fine form as he clanged off fourteen dolls 5-4-5 to inspire them to a hard fought 2-1 win at The King & Queen. Folly won the first two legs 21-16, 17-16 but lost the final leg 16-17.

The Nelson A are opening up a gap at the top of Section 6 after they beat The Catherine Wheel 2-1. Nelson put in another big opening leg of 27 which proved too much for The Catherine Wheel as they replied with 14. Nelson opened up a 2-0 lead in the next leg 18-16 but couldn’t claim maximum points as The Catherine Wheel won the final leg 20-19. Andy Walls and Steve Ledwell top scored for The Nelson with eleven dolls apiece. (4-4-3).
Donnington Club remain in second spot after they demolished The Nut Tree 3-0. Kevin Stone was in terrific form has he whipped off fifteen dolls including a six (4-5-6) and was helped by team mate Anthony Hayes with eleven dolls (2-6-3) in the leg scores of 19-6, 23-12, 25-19.
There was some unusual final leg scores in the game between Littelmore Rugby Club and Viking Sports C. The Rugby men scored seventeen in all their three legs but The Vikings hit three eighteens in reply to give them a 3-0 win. Anchor man Ian Gardiner hit the winning dolls in legs two & three.

In Section Seven only five points separate the top eight places and it’s The Chequers ‘B’ who hold a one point lead after they beat Brill Social Club ‘B’ 3-0, 16-14, 21-16, 17-16.

Section 8 leaders The Golden Ball ‘A’ had to rely on two three stickers to see them through against White Hart. The first and third legs were tied 18-18 with the middle leg going 16-14 in Golden Balls favour.
