Report 6th July

Fred Cook was in astounding form as he bagged himself a six in his fourteen doll haul (3-6-5) to guide The Rowing Machine to a 2-1 victory over The New Club ‘A’ in the Premier/ Section One. They lost the opening leg 28-23 but came storming back to win the next leg 31-21. Rowing Machine then wrapped up a good win in the final leg 26-22. Young Luke Purcell banged off a six in his dozen dolls for The New Club.
Jason Weller clanged off fourteen dolls (5-5-4) for The George as they came from behind to beat Headington British Legion 2-1. Having lost the first leg by the odd doll 28-27 The George levelled in the second leg 22-20 and won the deciding leg by the odd doll 26-25. Kevin Stuart starred for The Legion with a bakers dozen 5-5-3.
After being involved in a long night last week The White Hart repeated the feat against Garsington Sports Club ‘A’ with two of the three legs going to three sticks. The first leg was tied 18-18 with The Sports Men winning it on three sticks and then they won the next leg 22-18. White Hart set the final leg with 23 and after a slow reply from Garsington they left anchor man Tom Rect six to win. He almost pulled it off but ended up with five which sent the leg into three sticks. Garsington wrapped up the points again winning the leg on three sticks.

In Section 2 Ian Houghton from The Red Lion Brill could only muster a one in his opening throw but then followed it up with a six & five but it could still not prevent them going down 2-1 at The Gladiators ‘A’, 17-22, 19-20, 18-17.

Andy Kay hit a six in his total fourteen dolls (4-4-6) for The Royal Sun but it was all in vain as they lost out 3-0 to The Three Horseshoes in Section 3, 21-13, 18-14, 23-20.

It was not unlucky thirteen for The Vikings Club’s Alan Davies as he whipped off thirteen dolls (5-3-5) in their 3-0 defeat against Kennington Club A in Section 4. It was a comfortable win for The Vikings taking all three legs 25-15, 21-13, 24-18.
Leaders The Griffin saw off one of their closest rivals Garsington Sports Club B 3-0 although the game was closer than the score might suggest. Pete Hitchman (3-5-4) and Geoff Glenister (2-5-5) led the way with a dozen dolls apiece in the leg scores of 14-12, 22-21, 21-18

Section 6 leaders The Nelson A had a scare at The Vikings C. They just won the first leg 15-14 and were chasing a total of 12 in the second leg. With ten on the board and with two players to go it looked a formality that they would go 2-0 up, but disaster struck as their last two players failed to trouble the doll to give Vikings an unlikely point and level the game. Normal service was resumed in the final leg which Nelson won 17-13.

In Section 7 The Chequers B set their opponents Red Lion Wolvercote with fourteen in the opening leg. With only four on the board from their first four player’s in reply, things were looking bleak for The Red Lion, but anchor man Alan Wilkins rescued the leg by clanging off the four dolls needed to tie the leg, however The Chequers won the leg on three sticks. Chequers then won the next leg 15-8 and the final leg was tied 11-11. This time The Red Lion won the leg on three sticks to give them a point.
The Chandos Arms dented Northway Club’s title ambitions by winning all three legs 15-14, 18-10, 12-11. John Pickford was the pick of the bunch with eleven dolls 4-5-2.

Section 8 leaders Golden Ball A came crashing down to earth as they lost 3-0 at North Oxford Con Club A. It was a fairly comfortable win for The Club men as they won the first leg 15-8, just won the second 14-13, and then took maximum points in the final leg 12-9.
The White Hart took advantage of The Golden Balls slip to move within three points after a low scoring but close game at The Blackbird. Both teams hit 27 dolls with The White Hart taking an early lead in the first leg on three sticks after it was tied 8-8, but lost the next leg 6-4. White Hart won the final leg to give them victory 15-13.

Basement boys The Kings Arms Wheatley produced a shock in Section 9 by defeating leaders The Priory A 2-1. Two tremendous scores in the first and third legs saw them through. They won the first leg 17-8, lost the next 13-8 and then banged in a set of 18 which proved to strong for the leaders who replied with 16. Brian Lashley was top dog for The Kings Arms with eleven dolls (5-3-3).

Kennington Club B continue to rule the roost in Section 11 with a 3-0 win at The Prince Of Wales 12-5, 14-6, 14-11 for whom Howard Mansell starred with nine dolls 4-2-3.
