Pairs Report


It was Pairs competition this week played down to the four semi finalists and the Oxford Pairs holders Kevin Baker & Ivor Clarke from The Cricketers were paired against the runners up Kevin Giles & Dave Sawyer from The George in the first round, and it was sweet revenge for The George pair as they triumphed 2-1.
Philip Adams & Barry Townsend (Cricketers) had to rely on a three stick shoot out to see off Francis Hillier & Steve Walton (The George) in the first leg and then made sure of progress into the next round by taking the next leg 7-5.
Trevor Greenaway & Ken Maunder (Garsington Sports) just got the better over Andy Beal & Roger Goodall (Six Bells) 2-1 in a close game. The first leg was tied 8-8 with Beal & Goodall winning it on three sticks. The Garsington pair levelled in the next leg with a set of 9 to a reply of 6. The final leg the Garsington pair set six which proved to be just enough to see them through by the odd doll.
Billy Trinder & Kevin Stuart (Headington B.L.) won through 2-1 against Dennis Butler & Willy Waite (The George) but had to rely on three sticks in the final leg after the first two legs were shared 8-4, 5-9.
Second semi-finalists Barry & Martin Ruffles (Garsington Sports) had a shock in their first round match against Clive Proudfoot & Elaine May (Gladiators) losing the opening leg 6-5. They recovered well to win the next two legs to put them through to the second round.
Third Semi-finalists Dave Townsend & Mick Phipps (Three Pigeons) beat Ady Cross & Steve Horne (Six Bells) 2-1 in the first round.
Les Disley & Dennis Baxter (The George) fought their way into the second round by just getter the better over Martin Cross & Pete Coates (White Hart). First leg was tied 6-6 with Baxter & Disley winning it on three sticks. Cross & Coates levelled in the next leg 7-5 before The George pair made sure in the final leg 6-5.
The final semi-finalists Neil Lyon & Eddie Edwards (Three Pigeons) saw two scores of 8 see them through against Steve Bayliss & Steve James.
Nick Chapman & Chris Jenkins (Gladiators) who hit a six beat Keith Powell & John Greenaway (White Hart) 2-1.
Second Round
In the second round Edwards & Lyon had a comfortable 2-0 win against Wright & Taylor (Queens Head) while Chapman & Jenkins crashed out to The Wellers 2-1.
Townsend & Phipps (Three Pigeons) had a scare as they lost the opening leg to Richards & Allnutt (Gladiators) 8-7, but won the next two 7-6, 7-6. Allnutt bagged himself a six in the process.
Goulding & Seller (Cricketers) hit two scores of 8 which was enough to defeat Baxter & Disley (George).
Lyon & Edwards (Three Pigeons) eased out Wright & Taylor (Queens Head) 2-0.
The Ruffles brothers (Garsignton Sports) hit 9 & 8 to see off Trinder & Stuart (Headington B.L.) 2-0.
Fred Sawyer clanged off a six as he and his partner Dick Walsh (Six Bells) brushed aside Pete Dempsey & Craig Beal (Three Pigeons) 2-0.

Quarter Finals
In the Quarter finals Townsend (5) & Phipps (6) (Three Pigeons) shot of the blocks in the first leg with a set of 11 against Goulding & Seller (Cricketers). They then made sure of their semi-final place in the next leg 6-5.
The Ruffles brothers played team mates Greenway & Maunder and just beat them 2-1. They won the opening leg 8-7 lost the next 6-5 but won the decider 6-5.
Lyon & Edwards had to come from behind to beat The Wellers. After losing the first leg 8-4, they replied in the next leg with a set of 9 which was more than enough. The Wellers set the final leg with only 4 which was never going to be enough as Lyon hit the winning doll with sticks to spare.
With the game nicely poised at a leg each Adams & Townsend (Cricketers) set Walsh & Sawyer (Six Bells) 8 in the deciding leg which proved to be enough to see them into the semi finals.


In The Lower Section Pairs Barry Mudd & Clive Walsh from Kidlington Sports and Tony & Lee Gillett from Littlemore Rugby Club battled their way through to the final. Mudd & Walsh disposed of Brian Mossopp & Brian Lester (Littlemore Rugby club) in the first round 2-1 and then just scraped through against K.Keep & G.Williams (Cricketers) in the quarter finals. The Gillett’s beat Edmonds & Pickett (Kidlington Sports) in the 1st round and then had a hard fought win against Beck & Whiteman (Gladiators) in the quarter finals.
Mudd & Walsh them made it to their first ever final by defeating G.Arundel & P.Cook 2-1 in the semi final while the Gillett’s also won 2-1 against D.Holloway & M.Oliver (North Oxford Con Club) in their semi.
