FINALS NIGHT REPORT

Philip Adams (Cricketers ‘B’) made it a record ten wins in the Oxford Singles Cup as he beat Andy Beal (Six Bells) 2-0 before a packed crowd at Rover Sports Club. Adams won the opening leg on three sticks and then set five in the next leg which proved to be enough to give him the title.

In The Ted Houghton Singles Darren Cox (Team Monarch) had to come from behind to beat Andy Lewis (Ampleforth) 2-1. Cox set three in the opening leg but Lewis passed that with a stick to spare. Cox levelled in the next leg after Lewis only set two. The final and deciding leg Lewis set four. Cox Responded well and hit the winning doll with his final stick to take it 5-4.

In The Monty Greenaway Fours the quartet of Francis Hillier, John & Jason Weller and Steve Walton from The George beat The Cricketers 2-1. The George won the first leg 13-11 with The Cricketer’s taking the next leg 17-10. They then set thirteen in the final leg. George responded slowly and had only five on the board from their opening two players but a four from Jason Weller left anchor man Steve Walton five to win the leg. Walton did not disappoint has he clanged off the five dolls needed to win the leg and match.

In The Parent & Child Final Ray & Wayne Townsend (The Squire Bassett) beat Paul & Dave Townsend (Three Pigeons) 2-1. Ray & Wayne took the opening leg 8-6 only for Paul & Dave to level 4-3 in the next leg. Pigeons set the final leg with six. Ray Townsend opened up the reply with a four leaving son Wayne to whip of the three dolls needed for victory.

Cricketers Arms Littleworth beat The Ampleforth Arms 2-1 to win The Jim Whitbread Cup. Cricketers took an early lead in the first leg 17-10 but Ampleforth came back well to set 26 in the next leg. Cricketer’s got of to the best possible start when Derek Stansfield hit a six, but the rest of the team could not follow it up and they fell six dolls short. Cricketers then set 26 in the final leg which proved a bit too strong for The Ampleforth to give The Cricketers the win.

In The Under 18’s Cup Garsington Sports Elliott Greenough’s two sets of two was enough to beat The Kite’s Sam Cox who replied with two one’s.

Ivor Clarke & Kevin Baker from The Cricketers beat The George pair of Dave Sawyer and Kevin Giles to claim the Oxford Pairs Title. Cricketers won the first leg 6-5 but a six from Dave Sawyer and three from Giles in the second leg gave The George a set of nine to level the match. Cricketers set and won the final leg 8-6.

Darren Cox (Team Monarch) made it a double as he partnered Keith Bull to win the Lower Pairs 2-0 against the Chequers pair of Colin Richardson & Phil Hounslow.

Three Pigeons won The Greene King Cup beating The George 2-1. They won the opening leg 24-21 but lost the next 26-19. In the final leg Pigeons set an impressive 30 with Eddie Edwards banging off a six. George had no answer in reply and fell well short.

In The Oxford Fours the three man team from The Nelson defeated The Fairview 2-0.
