2nd September report
On one of the worst nights for weather as anyone can remember, and with only two sixes recorded over the whole league, Garsington Sports clinched the Section One title with a 3-0 win over New Club ‘A’. Top doll scorer Ken Maunder led the way with a dozen dolls 5-4-3 as they won all three legs 19-17, 23-14, 22-19.
Cricketer’s’ regained the Premier Title with a 3-0 win against seven men Black Swan. Needing only one point they claimed maximum points 25-21, 22-21, 29-19. Den Sellar was top dog with 13 dolls.
Any one of four teams can still clinch Section Two and it’s The Six Bells that lead the way after beating Turners Arms 2-1.They won the opening leg 18-14 but lost the next 14-16, before winning the final and deciding leg 18-14.
Gladiator’s Martin Cook was one of only two players to record a six as he smashed of 13 dolls (4-3-6) in their 2-1 defeat over Cowley Workers. With the advantage of an indoor throw The Glad’s lost the first leg 19-21 but came back well to take the next two legs 25-22, 25-23.
Red Lion Marston are Section 3 champions after beating one of their closest rivals Cross Keys 3-0. Kevin Stuart was in fine form with a dozen dolls (5-4-3) as they won all three legs 20-13, 18-17, 21-18.
In Section 4 the local derby between Red Lion & The Plough Garsington ended tamely as The Lion took maximum points 23-19, 18-12, 19-17. Red Lion’s Phil Jackson was the only other player to record a six in his dozen dolls (6-3-3) Team Mate Steve Prew was hit double figures with 10 dolls (3-2-5).
Section 5 leaders Chequers ‘A’ got a shock as they lost away at Cowley Con Club. Needing all three legs to clinch the title they lost the opening leg by the odd doll 15-14. They levelled in the second leg 20-18 but lost the last leg by the odd doll again 17-16. John Brown threw well for The Club men with 11 dolls (4-3-4) while Steve Tooke done the same for The Chequers.
Second place King and Queen could not capitalise on The Chequers loss as they also lost 2-1 at home to The White House. Chasing only 9 in the opening leg King & Queen could only muster up a reply of 4 and then lost the next leg 12-10. They grabbed a consolation point in the final leg 19-13.
Red Lion Brill are one point away from being crowned Section 6 Champions after beating local rivals Brill Social Club. The first leg was tied 14-14 with Red Lion winning it on three sticks. The Social Club won the next leg 15-12. The final and deciding leg went to The Red Lion 11-10.
The White Hart are clinging on hoping for The Red Lion to slip up, but they did not help themselves as they lost away at The Nelson 2-1. Nelson won the first leg 17-15 lost the next 11-16 but won the final leg 14-13.
In the semi-finals of the Oxford Singles last years winner Neil Lyon from the Three Pigeons came from behind to beat Dick Walsh from The Six Bells 2-1. The first leg Walsh won on three sticks after the leg was tied 3-3. Lyon then levelled in the next leg 5-3 then set four in the final leg which was enough as Walsh replied with 2.
He will meet Kevin Giles from The George in the final as he beat Kevin Baker from The Cricketers 2-0.
