8th July report

The George produced the great escape of the season as they beat Kidlington Sports ‘B’ 2-1 and only scoring just one extra doll in the process in the Premier Section. The Sports men got off to a great start setting 30 in the opening leg. The George responded well but still left anchor man Willy Waite six to win the leg. Waite gave it a good bash and fell just one doll short with five to send the leg into three sticks, in which The George won. Second leg George set 25. Kidlington Sports replied in a steady fashion but it was down to seventh man Andy Burns to give them the advantage as he clanged off a six to leave anchor man Dave Williams two to win the leg. The final and deciding leg The Sports Men set a winning 31 dolls and it looked like their first victory of the season was on the cards as The George only had twelve on the board with only half the team left and needing 19 to win. The great escape began with Les Disley clanging off a five, then Dave Sawyer chipped in with a four. Steve Walton bagged himself a six as did anchor man Willy Waite to secure the leg 33-31 and snatch what would have been a well earned win for Kidlington Sports. Steve Walton & Willy Waite both ended up with 14 dolls while Barry Williams top scored for Kidlington with 13.
Red Lion Eynsham boosted their Section One titles ambitions by beating closest rivals Garsington Sports Club 3-0 although the game was much closer then the score suggests. The first two legs were tied 21-21, 23-23 with The Lion winning them both on three sticks. Red Lion won the final leg a lot easier 27-18. Lee Thompson top scored with 14 dolls 4-4-6.

There was a shock in Section 2 as unbeaten leaders The Chequers ‘B’ lost to bottom place Cricketers ‘A’ Littleworth 2-1. They got of to a bad start losing the opening leg 19-13 but came back well to level in the second leg 26-20. Chequers could only muster 16 in the final leg and with The Cricketers responding with 20 it gave them an unexpected win. Pete Kennett for Chequers top scored with a dozen dolls 4-6-2.

Red Lion Marston tops Section 3 with a 3-0 win at home to Highfield Club ‘A’. Terry Stuart led the way with a 15 doll haul (5-5-5) and was well supported by Billy Trinder with 14 dolls (5-6-3) as they won all three legs 27-19, 33-19, 23-12.

After getting his name in blobbers section a few weeks ago Kennington Clubs Ian Walters now finds his name in the Sixers section as he hit a maximum in his dozen dolls as they beat Red Lion Garsington 2-1 in Section 4. They lost the first leg 23-21 but won the next two legs 16-14, 20-16.

In Section 5 The King & Queen and Vikings Sports both hit 54 dolls but it was Vikings who was victorious. Vikings set the first leg with 19 but King & Queen’s anchor man Stuart Fithett whipped of the four dolls needed to tie the leg, but they lost out on three sticks. Vikings lost the next leg 17-18 but won the final and deciding leg 18-17. Martin Wain was top dog with 11 dolls 5-3-3.

There was little to choose between Ashton Club and Littlemore Rugby Club in Section 9. Ashton Club set in the opening leg with 16 and after a slow reply from the Rugby men it was left to anchor man Tony Gillett to whip of the three dolls to level the leg and the one doll needed to win the three stick shoot out. Rugby Club set the next leg with 16 and this time it was Ashton’s anchor man Colin Grant to knock off the three dolls to tie the leg. Once again Rugby Club won the leg on three sticks and then claimed maximum points in the final leg 18-15. Andy Cox hit 11 dolls for Ashton Club as did Paul Evans for Littlemore Rugby.

Phil Chaundy was in devastating form as he clanged off 14 dolls 5-5-4 to inspire The Donnington Arms to a 2-1 win at home to Red Lion Yarnton in Section 10. Donnington won the first and last legs 17-12, 14-6 while Red Lion won the middle leg 16-14.
