Week 18

Games played Wednesday 6th September

With three teams going into the last week with a chance of the Section 2 title it was Six Bells ‘E’ Kidlington who came out on top. Needing all three points to secure the title they won the opening leg against their D team 21-16 and then set in the second leg. A slow start saw them score only sixteen with their first six players but two fives from Robin Busby & Ray Townsend boosted their total to 26. Six Bells D replied with 22. The E team then claimed the title in the final leg 22-16.
Bullnose Morris ‘A’ hoping for a slip up won their first two legs at home to Donnington Club ‘A’ 23-17, 24-20 but lost the last leg 21-19.
Chequers ‘C’ chances were diminished away at The Black Horse ‘C. Despite winning the opening leg 16-13 they lost the next two 18-17, 21-17.
Chris Webb for The Gladiators ‘B’ hit eleven dolls to push him into the 200 club as he ended up top scorer with 202 dolls. In the process The Glad’s whitewashed Vikings sports ‘A’ 3-0 in the leg scores of 22-19, 20-14, 22-22 (three sticks).
The Black Prince finished their season of in style by beating Garsignton Sports Club ‘A’ 2-1 at home. They set and won the opening leg 28-23. Garsington responded well in the next leg to set and win 30-27. A six from lead off man Rob Bradford helped The Black Prince win the third and deciding leg 30-26. Bradford finished with fourteen dolls (3-5-6) and ended up Section One top scorer with 204 dolls. Team mate Phil Austin also hit fourteen dolls (4-5-5). Trevor Greenaway hit his best score for nine years when he clanged off fifteen dolls (6-5-4) for Garsington Sports.
Dick Walsh finished off with a flurry as he bagged himself a six in his sixteen doll haul (6-5-5) for The Swan ‘A’ but it could not prevent them from losing at The Woodman 2-1. It started off well for The Swan winning the opening leg 32-25 but it was all downhill from there as The Woodman won the next two legs 29-23, 24-22.
Kevin Giles hit a dozen dolls and ended up top doll scorer overall with 222 dolls and in the process clanged off a six with his final throw to become the top sixers hitter with 8 in total. Champions The Gladiators’ A’ won all three legs against The George, however how they won the opening leg is a mystery. They set 25 and in reply The George had eighteen on the board after four players, but somehow only manged seven between their last four players to tie the leg. Glad’s won the three stick shoot out and then went on to claim the next two legs 25-23, 29-26. James Morrison finished the season off well with thirteen dolls (5-4-4) for The George.

The top two clashed in Section 3 and Garsington Sports ‘B’ needed one point at home to Chequers ‘A’ who needed all three. Chequers set the opening leg with twenty. In reply Garsington left anchor man Rob Jeffery one to win and with it the title, but he blobbed out to send it to three sticks which The Chequers won. The club men set the second leg with only seventeen and what should have been a formality for The Chequers they struggled and fell two short with fifteen to give Garsington the title. Final leg Chequers won 21-9.
Ronnie Wade was in top from for The King & Queen smashing off fifteen dolls (5-6-4) as they came away from The Queens Head with a 2-1 victory. Opening leg went to the hosts by the closest of margins 21-20 but King & Queen battled back well to win the next two legs 19-12, 27-13.

It was very close in the Section 4 game between Six Bells ‘B’ Kidlington and Masons Arms ‘A’ with only three dolls separating the teams overall. Masons set and won the first leg 16-15, the second leg was tied 14-14 and with a three and one stick tied it was back to six sticks which the Masons won. They then made it maximum points in the final leg 18-16.
Tracy Denton from Green Road club B is top lady scorer with 116 dolls after she clanged off eleven dolls (3-4-4) but it could not prevent them from a 2-1 loss at Littlemore British Legion ‘A’ in the leg scores of 15-10, 13-13, 21-10

In Section 5 Seacourt Bridge ‘A’ held a slender one point advantage over Bullnose Morris ‘B’ and knew a 3-0 win at Masons Arms ‘B’ would give them the title. They started off well winning the first leg on three sticks after it was tied 15-15. However they failed to capitalise on the early win and lost the next two legs 15-12, 15-11.

Bullnose Morris now needed all three points at The Cricketers Arms and they did just that taking maximum points 19-15, 22-14, 18-10 to give them the Section 5 crown.

In Section 7 Northway Club ‘C’ beat their ‘B’ team 3-0 and finished above them. It was a comfortable win for the C side in the leg scores of 18-11, 19-10, 18-8.

In Section 8 White Hart Wytham finished off a good second half of the season as they won their tenth game on the bounce when they won at home to The Kings Arms 2-1. After losing the opening leg 12-8 White Hart won the next two 16-5, 11-10.
Gladiators ‘C’ could only muster up a score of five in the first leg against Democrats Club ‘B’ who hit ten in reply. However The Glad’s came storming back in the next two legs to win them 13-10, 15-3.
