Week 17

Games played Wednesday 30th August

There was some excellent throwing this week with nineteen sixes hit, thirteen of them in the Premier/ Section One.
The Woodman was crowned Section One Champions after beating title contenders The Three Pigeons 3-0 away. Woodman won the first two legs 29-25, 28-25 and then were set 28 in the final leg. Knowing that wining this leg would give them the title they replied in nervous fashion hitting only 10 with their first four players. However a six from Jeff Genister kicked in a remarkable response as the last four players hit nineteen dolls with anchor man Mark Rollins clanging off the five dolls needed to give them the leg by the odd doll with 29.
Rollins ended up with fifteen (5-5-5) while Pigeons Neil Lyon’s sixteen dolls (6-5-5) were to no avail.
There were six sixes hit as champions Gladiators ‘A’ came from behind to beat Garsington Sports ‘A’ on their own patch, and in the process hit the highest score of the season with 95 dolls. Garsington set 31 in the opening leg and despite a six from Kevin Giles and Barry Townsend The Gladiators fell two short with 29. In the second leg a six from Andy Beal & Chris Jenkins helped the Glad’s set a whopping 33 to which Garsington replied with 25. Another six from Giles in the final leg enabled The Glad’s to bang in another set of 33 to Garsingtons reply of 26. Giles top scored with sixteen dolls (6-4-6) while team mates Barry Townsend with fifteen dolls (6-4-5) Chris Jenkins fourteen dolls (4-6-4) and Andy Beal thirteen dolls (3-6-4) all chipped in for The Glad’s. Darren Cox was top dog for Garsington with thirteen dolls (6-2-5).
There was a remarkable finish in the game between The George ‘A’ and Red Lion ‘A’ Yarnton. With The Lion winning the first two legs 28-23, 27-24 they set 27 in the third leg. In reply The George struggled and left their last two players twelve to win. Steve Bayless whipped of all six and then anchor man Kevin Stuart clanged off all six to give The George an incredible leg win. Stuart ended up with sixteen dolls (5-5-6)
Mark Revill was in magnificent form as he bagged himself a six in his sixteen doll haul (6-5-5) for The Swan ‘B in their 2-1 win at The New Club ‘A’. They won the first two legs 33-24, 28-22 but couldn’t make it a full house as the New Club hit back to take the last leg 27-22.
Dick Walsh hit fifteen dolls (5-6-4) for The Swan ‘A’ but it could not prevent visitors The Black Prince from coming away with all three points. Mick Phipps hit fourteen dolls (5-5-4) for The Prince in the leg scores of 27-25, 32-25, 30-26.

Three teams are still in with a shout for the Section 2 title and The Bullnose ‘A’ boosted their chances with a 3-0 whitewash at The Six Bells ‘A’ Quarry. It was a comfortable night for them as they ran out winners in each leg 26-18, 16-14, 22-13.
The Chequers ‘C’ dropped a valuable point at home to lowly Vikings ‘A’. They won the first two legs 19-13, 23-22 but chasing a set of 20 in the final leg, and with their last two players only mustering up two between them, they fell one short with 19.
Six Bells ‘D’ title hopes have crashed dramatically the past few weeks and they succumbed to their fifth consecutive defeat, this time at The Gladiators ‘B’. Martin Giles (4-4-4) and Chris Webb (3-5-4) led the way as they won all three legs 24-12, 25-13, 23-14.
Steve Walton hit fourteen dolls (5-5-4) for Donnington Club ‘A’ but it was to no avail as they lost to Black Horse ‘A’ 3-0 in the leg scores of 18-16, 22-17, 22-21. Team mate Phil Simpson chipped in with a six in his 10 dolls while Black Horse John Brown also hit a six in his dozen dolls.

Section Three leaders Chequers ‘A’ suffered a setback as they lost at home to The White House 2-1. After losing the opening leg 18-15 Chequers responded well to level in the next leg 23-18 but then fell apart in the deciding leg losing it 18-13.

Bullnose Morris ‘B’ are hot on their heels after they took maximum points at home to Cricketers ‘A’. Three scores of 17 to replies of 15-11-14 saw them over the line.

Six Bells ‘B’ Quarry hold top spot in Section 6 after they came away from Florence Park Club with all three points. Gavin Lovett clanged off a six as they won all three legs 16-10, 17-15, 14-12 and diminished any hope Florence Park had of the title.
Vikings Sports ‘C’ title hopes took a huge dent as they lost away at The Black Horse ‘B’ 2-1. It started of well for Vikings when they won the first leg 16-15 but they completely fell to pieces in the next leg when chasing a set of 17 they could only reply with a measly 6. Things didn’t improve in the final leg when they could only set with 9 which Black Horse flew by with 19. Nick Snr Edmonds was in fine form for The Black Horse hitting a bakers dozen (5-4-4).

It was a long night in the Section 7 clash between Kidlington Football Club & Northway Club ‘B’. The first two legs had to be decided on three sticks after they were tied 5-5 & 10-10, Kidlington winning them both. The Football club then completed the whitewash in the final leg 17-15.
